Laser Collimator collimator

"I just collimated my new telescope with this cool laser and now my view is messed up!" This happens more times than you would believe. That is why there is such a market for expensive laser collimator collimators. After all, if your laser is crooked then your scope will be crooked.

Enter the Lazy Astronomer. He showed me the way to a free collimator using a pine board and four nails. It worked!! I have refined the design to use scratch free wooden dowels instead of nails. Not quite as lazy, but I hope He will forgive me.

Step 1. Get a board.

Step 2. Drill four holes so your collimator will fit between the sets of dowels, and drill them in a way that allows you access to the three adjusting screws and that the switch will not hit them as you rotate the unit. Oh yeah, drill them at an angle like the picture shows.

Step 3. Wrap a piece of sandpaper around the body of your collimator and drag it back and fourth across the dowel sets until you have a nice cradle for the instrument.

Step 4. Lock the collimator collimator in a vice or clamp it firmly to something that will not move.

Step 5. Turn on laser and place it in dowel sets. A dot will appear on your wall, garage door, assistant, etc. Mark it.

Step 6. Rotate laser 1/3 way around and mark dot on target. Do again until you have a triangle of dots.

Step 7. Carefully adjust three screws on the laser until dot stays in the center of your triangle while rotating.
